Day Trips from Denver

The best day trips from Denver: Red Rocks, Golden, Boulder, Georgetown, Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park, ski towns, with drive times and tips.

One of the best things about Denver is how fast you can leave it. Within half an hour you're in the foothills; within two you can stand above treeline or ski a world-famous mountain. These are the classic day trips from the city, with no-traffic drive times from Union Station. Add time on weekends, in snow and at rush hour.

Half an hour or less

Red Rocks and Dinosaur Ridge

About 16.5 miles, roughly 27 minutes. The famous amphitheater is worth seeing even without a concert: come early, climb the rows and walk the park trails among the red sandstone. Dinosaur Ridge, next door, has real dinosaur tracks in the rock. Read our Red Rocks guide before a show.

Golden

About 16.4 miles, roughly 24 minutes. A historic foothills town on Clear Creek, home to the Coors brewery and a lively main street. Drive up Lookout Mountain to the Buffalo Bill Museum & Grave for views back over the plains. Golden pairs easily with Red Rocks in a single afternoon.

Under an hour

Boulder

About 27.5 miles, roughly 38 minutes. Pearl Street's pedestrian mall, the Flatirons rising over the town, and trails that start at Chautauqua Park. Stay for dinner at Frasca Food and Wine, which holds a Michelin star.

Idaho Springs

About 33 miles, roughly 45 minutes. An old mining town right on I-70, and a natural place to stop for a meal on the way back from the slopes. Note that the Floyd Hill construction just east of town affects I-70 traffic through 2029; our I-70 winter driving guide explains.

An hour or a little more

Georgetown

About 45 miles, roughly an hour. A Victorian mining town tucked below the high peaks, just off I-70. Its preserved downtown is one of the prettiest in Colorado, especially under snow.

Garden of the Gods, Colorado Springs

About 70 miles, roughly 1 hour 25 minutes. Towering red-rock formations against the backdrop of the southern Front Range. Combine it with a night in Colorado Springs.

Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park

About 63.5 miles, roughly 1 hour 35 minutes. The gateway town to Rocky Mountain National Park, where elk graze in the meadows below the high peaks. In 2026 the park required timed-entry reservations from May 22 to mid-October, released on the first of the prior month and the evening before, with a $2 booking fee on top of the park pass. Check the National Park Service's site for next season's dates before you go.

Fort Collins

About an hour north. A college town with a strong beer culture, home to New Belgium Brewing's riverside campus and tasting room. Tours are ticketed. Our breweries guide has more.

Ski day trips

Winter Park

About 67 miles, roughly 1 hour 40 minutes, over Berthoud Pass. The closest big resort to Denver, and the only one with a ski train from Union Station, the seasonal Winter Park Express.

Breckenridge, Keystone and Copper

Breckenridge is about 80.5 miles, roughly 1 hour 50 minutes. All three sit in Summit County, through the Eisenhower–Johnson Tunnel. A day on the slopes is very doable if you leave early and come back late, after the Sunday rush.

Vail

About 97 miles, roughly 2 hours. Vail Village makes a beautiful day out in any season. For the drive from DEN, see Vail Moments.

Tips for a smooth day trip

  • Start early. Weekend traffic into the mountains builds on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings, and heading back it peaks on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
  • Check the roads. COtrip.org and the 511 line are the official sources for closures and chain laws.
  • Pack layers. The high passes are much colder than the city, even on a sunny day.
  • Respect the altitude. Drink water, wear sunscreen, and take it easy on hikes the first day.
  • Book reservations first. National park entry, popular restaurants and tours sell out in summer.

Staying in the mountains instead?

If the mountains are the destination rather than a day out, we'll take you there: long private transfers from DEN or your Denver hotel to Breckenridge, Keystone, Copper Mountain, Winter Park and Steamboat. Book your transfer, or compare resorts in Colorado ski resorts from Denver.
