Steamboat is the longest ski transfer we drive from Denver International Airport, and the one where an honest drive time matters most. By road it's about 175 to 180 miles. With no traffic, the drive takes about 3 hours 45 minutes. On a busy weekend or in snow, plan for 4 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours 30 minutes. You may see shorter times quoted from Denver itself; from the airport terminal, these are the realistic numbers.
The route
1. Peña Boulevard from the airport to I-70 west
2. Through the foothills and the Eisenhower–Johnson Tunnel to Exit 205 at Silverthorne
3. CO 9 north for about 37 miles to Kremmling
4. US 40 west for about 51 miles, over Rabbit Ears Pass and down into Steamboat Springs
Rabbit Ears Pass tops out at 9,426 feet, with a 6.8% descent on the western side toward town. CO 9 and US 40 are two-lane highways where wildlife on the road is a real hazard, especially at dusk.
There's an alternative: leave I-70 at Empire and take US 40 over Berthoud Pass, through Winter Park and Granby. It avoids the tunnel but adds a second high pass. Your chauffeur picks the better route on the day, based on conditions.
Winter on the long road
- The I-70 portion is under Colorado's Traction Law from September 1 to May 31, and CDOT activates it on Rabbit Ears in storms.
- The I-70 leg is the slow part on weekends: Friday afternoons westbound, Saturday and Sunday afternoons eastbound.
- Floyd Hill construction near Idaho Springs continues through 2029.

Shuttle, flight or private car?
GO Alpine runs a shared shuttle between DEN and Steamboat, with stops by reservation at I-70 and Youngfield, Silverthorne and Kremmling. It's the shared option, with the stops and timetable that come with it.
Flying to Hayden (HDN). Yampa Valley Regional Airport is about 22 miles from Steamboat and, in winter, has nonstop flights from 12 major airports. If one of them works for you, it's a strong choice, and you'll still want a ride from Hayden.
Rental car. Possible, but nearly four hours of winter mountain driving after a flight, much of it on two-lane roads, is a big ask.
Private car. Door to door from the DEN curb, with stops whenever you want them, room to sleep in the back, and a chauffeur experienced on mountain roads. Book your ride to Steamboat.
What's included
- Flight tracking, plus a chauffeur waiting for you at DEN
- Door-to-door service to your lodging in Steamboat
- Help with luggage and ski gear
- Stops on request; on a long drive, a meal stop in Silverthorne is a good idea
- Child seats on request
- A chauffeur experienced with mountain passes in winter
- A full-size luxury SUV such as an Expedition MAX, Yukon XL or Suburban, or an 11-passenger Ford Transit for bigger groups
Plan ahead
Steamboat is on the Ikon Pass. Leaving Steamboat for a flight home? Allow for the full drive plus a generous buffer, and avoid Sunday afternoons on I-70 if you can. Book your return at the same time. Compare the alternatives in Colorado ski resorts from Denver, or see all airport routes.
