Denver Airport to Breckenridge

Private car from Denver airport to Breckenridge: about 104 miles and 2 h 15 min without traffic, with flight tracking, ski-bag space and winter-ready drivers.

Breckenridge is about 104 miles from Denver International Airport. Without traffic the drive takes about 2 hours 15 minutes. On a busy winter weekend or in a storm, plan for 3 to 4 hours, and Saturday mornings can bring a line on CO 9 into town.

How the drive goes

From the terminal, the route follows Peña Boulevard to I-70 west, past Denver and up through the foothills, Idaho Springs and Georgetown, then through the Eisenhower–Johnson Tunnel under the Continental Divide. On the far side you drop into Summit County, leave I-70 at Frisco and follow CO 9 south into Breckenridge.

There's no open pass on the way; the tunnel does the climbing. But the tunnel approach sits above 11,000 feet, and the I-70 mountain corridor is under Colorado's Traction Law from September 1 to May 31. CDOT can activate it on CO 9 as well.

Winter notes

  • Timing is everything. Westbound traffic builds on Friday afternoons. Eastbound, heading back to DEN, it builds on Saturday and especially Sunday afternoons.
  • Floyd Hill construction east of Idaho Springs means lane shifts and lower speed limits through 2029.
  • Metering. On busy afternoons CDOT meters eastbound on-ramps, including at Frisco, and the tunnel approach. It adds a few minutes, not hours.

Our I-70 winter driving guide covers all of this in detail.

Your options, compared fairly

Shared shuttle

Epic Mountain Express runs shared and private service from DEN to Breckenridge, and Epic Pass holders get a discount. A shared van keeps to a schedule and stops for other passengers' lodging.

Snowstang

CDOT's seasonal weekend ski bus runs from Denver to Breckenridge, not from the airport, so you'd first ride the A Line to Union Station. Tickets are bought ahead and seats aren't reserved. Great for a budget day trip; less practical with luggage.

Bustang

The West Line runs the I-70 corridor through Frisco. You'd need your own connection on to Breckenridge.

Rental car

Freedom on the mountain, but you'll drive I-70 after a flight, possibly in snow, and many rentals have all-season tires that may not satisfy the Traction Law.

Private car

Door to door from the DEN curb to your condo, on your schedule, with room for the whole family and every ski bag. Book your ride to Breckenridge.

What every ride includes

Your chauffeur is experienced on I-70 in winter. We track your flight, meet you on arrival, load the luggage and skis, and stop wherever you need: a grocery store in Frisco or Silverthorne before the condo is a favorite. Child seats are available on request. Choose a luxury full-size SUV (Expedition MAX, Yukon XL, Suburban or similar) for up to six, or an 11-passenger Ford Transit for bigger groups.

Going home: Breckenridge to Denver airport

For the return, the eastbound Sunday rush is the one to respect. If your flight leaves on a Sunday afternoon, we'll suggest an early start, or a Saturday-evening departure and a night near the airport. Give yourself real buffer. Book the return when you book the way up.
